Questions to ask before buying a trading algorithm

Before buying a trading algorithm, ask about verified results, drawdown, risk controls, custody, costs, and support. Here is the checklist that protects your capital.

Before buying a trading algorithm, ask whether its results are independently verified, what its worst drawdown has been, how it controls risk, whether your capital stays in your own account, and what the total cost is. The answers separate a serious tool from a marketing pitch, and a provider who answers them clearly is one worth considering.

Is the track record live and independently verified?

Ask for a link to a live account tracked by a third party such as MyFxBook, and confirm it is live rather than a demo. Screenshots and backtests are not verification. If the provider cannot give you a link you can open and inspect yourself, treat the results as unproven.

What is the maximum drawdown?

Every strategy has losing periods. Ask for the deepest peak-to-trough drawdown the account has experienced, because that is the decline you would have had to endure. A provider who talks only about gains and avoids drawdown is showing you half the picture.

How does it manage risk?

Ask how the algorithm sizes positions, where it places stops, and whether it uses any loss-recovery methods like martingale or grid. Understand the risk method before you deploy capital. Sound position sizing and defined stops are signs of a disciplined system.

Does my capital stay in my own account?

Legitimate automated forex software runs inside your own brokerage account and never takes custody of your funds. Confirm that the provider only supplies the software and that your money stays with your own broker under your control.

What is the total cost of ownership?

Ask about every cost, not just the headline. That usually means an access or license fee, an ongoing subscription, the VPS needed to keep the software running, and your own trading capital. Knowing the full picture lets you compare providers honestly.

What are the terms and the guarantee?

Read the refund terms and any guarantee carefully. A money-back guarantee tied to clear conditions is reasonable. A performance guarantee promising specific returns is not, because no one can guarantee market outcomes. Understand exactly what is and is not promised.

Who is behind it and how do you reach support?

Confirm there is a real, registered company, published disclosures, and a way to reach a human. Ongoing support matters, because you will have questions during setup and operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I ask before buying a trading algorithm?

Ask whether results are live and independently verified, what the maximum drawdown is, how it manages risk, whether your capital stays in your own account, the total cost, and the refund terms.

What is the total cost of running a trading algorithm?

Typically an access or license fee, an ongoing subscription, a VPS to keep the software online, and your own trading capital. Ask the provider to itemize all of it.

Is a performance guarantee a good sign?

No. A performance guarantee promising specific returns is a warning sign, because no one can guarantee market outcomes. A conditional money-back guarantee is more reasonable.

Should the algorithm provider hold my trading capital?

No. Legitimate providers supply only the software, which runs in your own brokerage account. Your capital should stay with your own broker under your control.
