MetaTrader 5, or MT5, is a multi-asset trading platform that lets traders run automated strategies through programs called expert advisors. It is one of the most widely used platforms in retail and prosumer forex because it combines charting, order execution, backtesting, and full support for algorithmic trading in a single environment that connects directly to a broker.

What is MetaTrader 5?

MT5 is the successor to MetaTrader 4, developed by MetaQuotes. It provides live price feeds, advanced charting, an economic calendar, and a strategy tester, and it executes orders through whichever broker you connect it to. Its programming language, MQL5, lets developers build expert advisors that automate entries, exits, and risk management. MT5 supports both hedging and netting account modes and faster multi-threaded backtesting than its predecessor.

Why do algorithmic traders prefer MT5?

Algorithmic traders favor MT5 for a few concrete reasons. Its backtesting engine is faster and supports multi-currency and multi-timeframe testing, which matters when you are validating a strategy on historical data before risking capital. MQL5 is a more capable language that supports object-oriented design and integration of machine learning models. And because MT5 is supported by a large number of brokers, a strategy built for it can run in many different account environments without being rewritten.

MT5 vs MT4: what is the difference?

MT4 was built primarily for forex and remains popular for that reason. MT5 is a broader, multi-asset platform with a more powerful language, better testing tools, and native support for more order types. For a purely manual forex trader the difference is modest. For someone running or building automated strategies, MT5 is generally the stronger foundation because of its testing engine and programming capabilities.

Does MT5 trade automatically on its own?

No. MT5 is the platform, not the strategy. It becomes automated only when you attach an expert advisor to a chart and enable algorithmic trading. The EA supplies the logic, and MT5 supplies the execution environment and the connection to your broker. The DeLorean execution system, for example, is an EA that runs on MT5.

Is MT5 free?

The MT5 platform itself is free to download and is provided by most brokers at no additional cost. What can carry a cost is the software you run on top of it. A licensed expert advisor, a VPS to keep it online, and your own trading capital are separate from the free platform. Understanding that separation helps you evaluate what you are actually paying for when you license an algorithm.
